Effortless Shawl – Free Crochet Shawl Pattern
I recently discovered Hobbii and their wide variety of beautiful, squishy yarns. When I tried them for the first time, I could not resist ordering a cake of Twister. I already knew I wanted to create another shawl, and this yarn was the perfect inspiration.
For this design, I chose a simple shape and combined it with some of my favourite stitches. I’ve written some complex patterns in the past, and I really wanted to make something that wasn’t too complicated but still fun, something that would coordinate with anything and add instant style to any outfit.

Finished Sizes:
Instructions given to make a 62” L x 31” H shawl with added notes for making a larger shawl.
Abbreviations:
Rs = Right Side
Ws = Wrong Side
Sk = Skip
Sp = Space
St = Stitch
Ss = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
Tr = Treble Crochet
Materials:
I used Hobbii Twister, which is a 55% Cotton/45% Acrylic, #2 Fingering weight yarn.
Any yarn of similar weight would work.
Approximately 1094 yds.
4.5mm Hook
Stitch Markers
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Measuring Tape
Gauge:
If you are using a different yarn, gauge is not very important with this shawl. Use a hook that suits your yarn and gives it a good drape.
If you are using the same yarn I used and you would like to achieve the same drape, you may want to get close to the gauge I achieved.
I have noted in the pattern at which point you should measure for gauge.
Notes:
Ch1 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.
Ch1 between sts does count as a stitch.
Ch3 at the beginning of a row is considered a dc.
You can find a tutorial for working into the 3rd LO here.
You can find a tutorial for the Mixed Cluster (Mc) stitch here.

Instructions
This shawl is created in one piece, working in rows.
With 4.5 mm hook:
Begin with a Magic Ring.
- (RS) Ch3. Work a dc and tr into the ring and pull tight to close. Turn. – 3 st
- (WS) Ch4, hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, ch1, hdc in same st). Ch1, sk1, hdc in last st. – 5 st
- Ch1. Hdc in 1st st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. (2hdc, dc) in last st. Turn. – 7 st
- Ch3, 2hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, 2hdc in same st). Hdc in next st and each st across. Turn. – 9 st
- Ch1. Hdc in 1st st. Hdc in BLO of next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. Working in both top loops, (2hdc, dc) in last st. Turn. – 11 st
- Ch3, 2hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, 2hdc in same st). Hdc in 3rd LO of next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. Hdc in 2 top loops of last st. Turn. – 13 st
- Ch1. Hdc in 1st st. Beginning In same st, mc across until all sts have been worked. (Hdc, dc) in last st. Turn. – 15 st
- Ch3, 2hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, 2hdc in same st). Beginning in same st, mc across until all sts have been worked. Hold back the last ch1 of the last mc, and hdc in the last st. Turn. – 17 st
- Ch1. Hdc in 1st st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. (2hdc, dc) in last st. Turn. – 19 st
- Ch3, 2hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, 2hdc in same st). Hdc in 3rd LO of next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. Hdc in 2 top loops of last st. Turn. – 21 st
- Ch3. Dc in BLO of next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. Working in 2 top loops: (2dc, tr) in last st Turn. – 23 st
- Ch4, hdc in 1st st (counts as dc, ch1, hdc in same st). *Ch1, sk1, hdc in next st.** Repeat from * to ** across. Turn. – 25 st
Gauge Check: At this point your first 12 rows should be approximately 4” high and your last row should be 4 ¾” wide.
Repeat rows 3-12 until you have achieved the desired size. For my shawl I worked a total of 126 rows and used up the entire cake of yarn.
To make it easier to follow along, I have made a shorthand version of the pattern below.

Effortless Shawl – Free Crochet Shawl Pattern
Weave in your ends, and you’re done! Since I used a cotton blend, my shawl did not need to be blocked. If you used a wool blend, I would recommend blocking to stretch and flatten your shawl.
I hope you love your new crochet shawl, and I look forward to seeing all of your beautiful pictures on Ravelry!
