When I wrote the Falling Feathers set, I actually wrote this toque pattern first which is unusual since I often write the cowl and then draw my inspiration from there. I just knew this stitch would make a wonderful hat, and I was eager to try designing a messy bun pattern. With Covid, this hair is getting quite long and unruly. 

However, I know that messy bun hats aren’t everyone’s thing, so I also added instructions for making a solid toque.

Finished Sizes:

Instructions given to fit size Small; changes for Medium & Large are in () 

S (M, L)

To Fit Head Circumference: 21” (22”, 23”)

Finished Circumference: 19” (20”, 21”) 

Abbreviations:

Sk = Skip

Sp = Space

St = Stitch

Yo = Yarn Over

Ss = Slip Stitch

Ch = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Dc = Double Crochet

Fst = Feather Stitch

Fphdc = Front Post Half Double Crochet

Materials:

I used Lion Brand Heartland, which is 100% Acrylic, #4 Worsted weight yarn. 

Any yarn of similar weight would work. 

Approximately 180 (190, 200) yds. 

5.5mm Hook

Stitch Markers

Yarn Needle

Scissors

Measuring Tape

Gauge Swatch:

With 5.5mm hook, ch 15.

1. Hdc in 2nd ch and each ch across. Turn. – 14 st

2. Ch1. Hdc in 1st st and each st across. Turn.   – 14 st

Repeat row 2 until you have 11 rows total. Your swatch should be 4 ½” W x 4 ½” H

Notes:

Ch1 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.

A Feather Stitch counts as 2 sts. 

 I have added many pictures to help you along the way.  

Includes instructions for a toque or a messy bun beanie.

Instructions

This hat is worked in rounds from the top down, and you will turn after each round. I have provided instructions to make a regular toque as well as a messy bun beanie. To make the regular toque, begin with the instructions for Crown (Toque), skip the instructions for Crown (Messy Bun), and continue with the instructions for Hat Body (Both). To make the Messy Bun Beanie, begin with the instructions for Crown (Messy Bun) and continue with the instructions for Hat Body (Both). 

Crown (Toque)

With 5.5mm Hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge)

Form a magic ring.

1. Ch1. Work 6 sc into the ring. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 6 (6, 6) st

2. Ch1. 2hdc in 1st st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 12 (12, 12) st

3. Ch1, hdc in 1st st, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st. ** repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 18 (18, 18) st

4. Ch1, hdc in 1st 2 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 2 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 24 (24, 24) st

5. Ch1, hdc in 1st 3 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 3 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 30 (30, 30) st

6. Ch1, hdc in 1st 4 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 4 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 36 (36, 36) st

7. Ch1, hdc in 1st 5 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 5 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 42 (42, 42) st

8. Ch1, hdc in 1st 6 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 6 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 48 (48, 48) st

9. Ch1, hdc in 1st 7 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 7 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 54 (54, 54) st

10. Size S: Ch1, hdc in 1st 12 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 12 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around until there are only 2 sts left. Hdc in last 2 sts. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. Skip round 11 and continue to instructions for Hat Body (Both) below.  – 58 (n/a, n/a) st

Sizes M & L: Ch1, hdc in 1st 8 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 8 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. Size M only: Skip round 11 and continue to instructions for Hat Body (Both) below.   – n/a (60, 60) st

Crown (Messy Bun)

With 5.5mm Hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge)

Ch30. Ss to the 1st ch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist your chain while doing so.

1. Ch1. Sc in 1st 4 chs, 2sc in next ch. *Sc in next 4 chs, 2sc in next ch. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 36 (36, 36) st

2. Ch1, hdc in 1st 5 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 5 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 42 (42, 42) st

3. Ch1, hdc in 1st 6 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 6 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 48 (48, 48) st

4. Ch1, hdc in 1st 7 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 7 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 54 (54, 54) st

5. Size S: Ch1, hdc in 1st 12 sts, 2hdc in next st. *Hdc in next 12 sts, 2hdc in next st. ** Repeat from * to ** around until there are only 2 sts left. Hdc in last 2 sts. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. Skip round 6 and continue to instructions for Hat body (Both) below.  – 58 (n/a, n/a) st

Hat Body (Both)

1. Ch1, hdc in 1st st, ch1, sk1 st. *Hdc in next st, ch1, sk1 st. ** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.   – 58 (60, 64) st

2. Ch1. Starting in next ch1 sp, fst around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.    – 58 (60, 64) st

3. –  5.    Repeat round 2.   – 58 (60, 64) st

6. (Wrong side) Ch1. Hdc in 1st st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn.    – 58 (60, 64) st

Repeat rounds 1 – 6 one more time (you can repeat them 2 more times if you want a slouchy hat). Then move on to the instructions for the Hat Band (Both). 

Hat Band (Both)

To make the band, we will be working short rows off of the last round worked on the body of the hat. Turn your work so that the right side is facing you. 

1. Ch7 (see Figure 1). Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (see Figure 2). Ss to next unworked st on hat body. Ss to next unworked st on hat body (see Figure 3). Turn.   – 6 st

2. Sk 2 ss. Fphdc around next st and each st across (see Figure 4). Turn.   – 6 st

3. Ch1. Fphdc around 1st st and each st across. Ss to next unworked st on hat body. Ss to next unworked st on hat body (see Figure 5). Turn.   – 6 st

Repeat rows 2 & 3 all the way around the hat body. You will end with a row 3 repeat, but don’t finish the 2nd ss (see Figure 6).

Turn your work so that the right side is facing you and the last row you just worked is sitting over the first row you worked (see Figure 7). Ss the band closed working through the bottom loop of your first row and the top 2 loops of your last row (see Figure 8). The resulting seam should be nearly invisible (see Figure 9).

Weave in your ends, and you’re done!
