When I wrote the Falling Feathers set, I actually wrote this toque pattern first which is unusual since I often write the cowl and then draw my inspiration from there. I just knew this stitch would make a wonderful hat, and I was eager to try designing a messy bun pattern. With Covid, this hair is getting quite long and unruly.

However, I know that messy bun hats aren’t everyone’s thing, so I also added instructions for making a solid toque.

To make the regular toque, begin with the instructions for Crown (Toque), skip the instructions for Crown (Messy Bun), and continue with the instructions for Hat Body (Both). Hat Band (Both)

To make the band, we will be working short rows off of the last round worked on the body of the hat. Turn your work so that the right side is facing you.

1. Ch7 (see Figure 1). Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (see Figure 2). Ss to next unworked st on hat body. Ss to next unworked st on hat body (see Figure 3). Turn.   – 6 st

Repeat rows 2 & 3 all the way around the hat body. You will end with a row 3 repeat, but don’t finish the 2nd ss (see Figure 6).

Figure 6

Turn your work so that the right side is facing you and the last row you just worked is sitting over the first row you worked (see Figure 7). Ss the band closed working through the bottom loop of your first row and the top 2 loops of your last row (see Figure 8). The resulting seam should be nearly invisible (see Figure 9).
