The Celtic Weave stitch takes center stage in this chunky winter hat. It is surprisingly easy to do and results in a beautiful texture you’ll love to wear again and again.

How To Crochet The Free Crochet Hat Pattern – Aisling Toque
Finished Sizes:
Instructions given to fit size Small; changes for Medium & Large are in ()
S (M, L)
To Fit Head Circumference: 21” (22”, 23”)
Finished Hat Circumference: 20” (21”, 22”)
Finished Length: Customizable. Length shown on model is 9 ½”.
Materials:
I used Lion Brand Heartland, which is 100% Acrylic, #4 Worsted weight yarn.
Any yarn of similar weight would work.
Approximately 275 (300, 325) yds.
5.5mm Hook
Stitch Markers
Yarn Needle

Abbreviations:
Sk = Skip
Sp = Space
St = Stitch
Ss = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
FPHDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet
FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet
FPTR = Front Post Treble Crochet
BPTR = Back Post Treble Crochet
FPDC2tog = Front Post Double Crochet 2 Together
BPDC2tog = Back Post Double Crochet 2 Together

Notes:
Ch1 & ch2 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.
Ch3 at the beginning of a row is always considered a Dc.

Free Crochet Hat Pattern – Aisling Toque
Gauge Swatch
With 5.5mm hook
- Ch 18. Dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. – 16 st
- Ch3. *Sk 2 sts, fptr in next 2 sts. Fptr in 2 previously skipped sts.** Repeat from * to ** until 3 sts left. Fpdc in next 2 sts. Dc in last st. Turn. – 16 st
- Ch3. *Sk 2 sts, bptr in next 2 sts. Bptr in 2 previously skipped sts.** Repeat from * to ** until 3 sts left. Bpdc in next 2 sts. Dc in last st. – 16 st
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have a total of 8 rows. Your swatch should measure 4” W x 4” H.
Instructions
Band
With 5.5mm Hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge)
- Ch10. Hdc in bottom bar of 2nd ch and each ch across. Turn. – 9 st
- Ch1. Fphdc in 1st st and each st across. Turn. – 9 st
Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 83 (87, 91) rows. Now we will ss the ends of the band together.
- Turn your work as if you are going to do another row of fphdc, but don’t ch.
- Fold the bottom row up so that it sits behind your top row.
- Insert your hook through the 3rd loop of your top row and the bottom 2 loops of your starting chain and make a slip stitch. (See figure 1)
- Slip stitch in this manner all the way across. This is the wrong side of your band. (See figure 2)
- Turn the band right side out. (See figure 3) Do not bind off. The first round will be worked into the side of the band where your hook is. We will now be working in the round, but still turning after each round.

- Ch1. Place 1 hdc in the end of each row, until you have 1 row left unworked. Place 2hdc in the end of the last row. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 84 (88, 92) sts
- Ch2. Fpdc in 1st st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 84 (88, 92) sts
- (RS) Ch2. Fptr in next 2 sts. Fptr in 2 sts before the 2 you just worked. *Sk 2 sts, fptr in next 2 sts. Fptr in 2 sts just skipped.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 84 (88, 92) sts
- (WS) Ch2. Bptr in next 2 sts. Bptr in 2 sts before the 2 you just worked. *Sk 2 sts, Bptr in next 2 sts. Bptr in 2 sts just skipped.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 84 (88, 92) sts
Repeat rounds 3 & 4 until you have a total of 12 rounds.
- Ch2. *Fpdc2tog over next 2 sts.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 42 (44, 46) st
- Ch2. *Bpdc2tog over next 2 sts.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 21 (22, 23) st
- Work only the instructions marked with your size.
Sizes S & L: Ch2. *Fpdc2tog over next 2 sts.** Repeat from * to ** until only 1 st left. Fpdc in last st. Ss to join to 1st st. Bind off, leaving a long tail for closing. – 11 (n/a, 12) st
Size M: Ch2. *Fpdc2tog over next 2 sts.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – n/a (11, n/a) st
Weave the yarn tail through the remaining sts, pull tightly to close, and knot to secure. Weave in all your ends, and you’re done!
