Growing up, one of my favourite snacks was pickled herring (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!). My grandma introduced it to me when I was just a baby. To this day, it still reminds me of her.

I fell in love with the herringbone single crochet the moment I laid eyes on it. It’s so textured and squishy. And it absolutely shines when you work it with a thick single ply yarn like Lion Brand Scarfie!

When I found out that the common name for Herring is Silver Darlings, I knew I had found a name for this pattern. My Gran would have loved that.

Finished Size:

Finished Width: (On widest end) 29”

Finished Length: 45 ½ “

Materials:

I used Lion Brand Scarfie, which is a 78% Acrylic/22% Wool #5 Bulky yarn.

Any yarn of similar weight would work.

Approximately 615 yds.

7mm Hook

Stitch Markers

Yarn Needle

Scissors

Measuring Tape

Abbreviations:

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

Sk = Skip

St = Stitch

Ss = Slip Stitch

Ch = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

Hsc = Herringbone Single Crochet (see the tutorial here)

Blo = Back Loop Only

Gauge:

There is a place to measure the gauge within the pattern. Gauge is only important if you want your finished scarf to look like the sample.

Notes:

Ch1 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.

This entire pattern will be worked in the back loop only, though the Hsc tutorial is shown using both top loops.

For this pattern we will only be using the herringbone single crochet (Hsc), and not the reverse herringbone single crochet (Rhsc).

Instructions

This scarf is worked in rows, with increases on one side of the project. The edges are left unfinished. All rows after row 1 are worked into the back loop only.  Remember that we do not do reverse herringbone single crochet stitches, only regular herringbone single crochet stitches.

With 7mm hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge)

  1. (RS) Ch2. (Sc, hsc) in 2nd ch from hook. Turn.   – 2 st
  2. (WS) Ch1. In Blo: Sc in 1st st. 2 hsc in last st. Turn.   – 3 st
  3. Ch1. In Blo: (Sc, hsc) in 1st st. Hsc in next 2 sts. Turn.   – 4 st
  4. Ch1. In Blo: Sc in 1st st. Hsc in next 2 sts. 2 hsc in last st. Turn.   – 5 st
  5. Ch1. In Blo: 2 ss in 1st st. Ss in each st across. Turn.   – 6 st
  6. Ch1. In Blo: Ss in 1st st and each st until 1 left. 2 ss in last st. Turn.   – 7 st
  7. Ch1. In Blo: (Sc, hsc) in 1st st. Hsc in each st across. Turn.   – 8 st
  8. Ch1. In Blo: Sc in 1st st. Hsc in next st and each st until 1 left. 2 hsc in last st. Turn.   – 9 st
  9. Ch1. In Blo: (Sc, hsc) in 1st st. Hsc in next st and each st across. Turn.   – 10 st
  10. Ch1. In Blo: Sc in 1st st, Hsc in next st and each st until 1 left. 2 hsc in last st. Turn.   – 11 st

Gauge check: Your project should be 3” wide with the last row, and 4 ¼” high when measuring at the straight edge.

Repeat rows 5-10 until you have a total of 112 rows, ending with a repeat of row 10. Bonus: I have added a shorthand version below to help you keep track of your rows.

Keyhole Row

  1. Ch1. In Blo: 2 ss in 1st st. *Ss in next 7 sts. Ch6, sk 6 sts.** Repeat from * to ** 7 more times. Ss in each remaining st across. Turn.   – 114 st

Repeat rows 6-10. Then repeat rows 5-10. Then repeat rows 5 & 6. On the last row, work only 1 ss into the last st. Bind off.

Shorthand Pattern

I have written a shorthand version of the pattern for you here. You may find it handy to keep track of your rows. Feel free to print it so you can check off each row as you go. To make the rows fit in the columns, I have condensed them quite a bit. So remember that you ch1 at the beginning of each row (after row 1), you are working into the blo throughout the pattern, and the first hsc is actually a sc.

  1. I have been crocheting a card using your Winter Waves Scarf pattern. Today it only showing the page in html. Can I purchase the pattern somewhere?

    • Hi Rhonda.
      I’m sorry that you’re having trouble accessing the blog page. I just purged my server cache, hoping that might fix the issue. You can try deleting your cookies and resetting your device. That might do the trick. I don’t know what causes it, but sometimes websites act up.
      I would rather you be able to see the free blog page, but if you really want to buy a pdf, you can get it on Ravelry here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/winter-waves-scarf-3
      If there is anything else you need, please just let me know.

    • Hi Tami.
      It would come out a bit smaller. You might have to work more rows in order to make it long enough to fit around your neck and gather the way mine does. But I’m sure it would be just as pretty!

  2. I have bought your pattern for the silver darlings scarf. I even have the yarn..
    The Herringbone single crochet is defeating me.

    I have been trying to duplicate it with 4 weight yarn. I have looked at every tutorial I can find on line. None of them are the same. Or clearly show how to insert the hook into the proper loop. Feeling very frustrated. Is there a clearer way for me to understnd how to do this.

    • Hi Lou,
      Have you taken a look at my tutorial? I use a yarn needle to indicate which loop you are to use. You can find my tutorial here: https://ineeditcrochet.com/herringbone-single-crochet-stitch-tutorial/
      You just insert your hook through the left leg of the previous stitch. The “legs” are the parts of the stitch that stand vertical. You’ll want insert your hook from right to left.
      Then you insert your hook as normal in the next stitch, yo, and draw up a loop. Then you yo and draw through all 3 loops on your hook.
      I hope that was helpful for you! Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do.
