I’ve always loved the look of a long, lacy vest. When I sold finished crochet projects on Etsy I had the privilege of making many long vests. The vibe is just so carefree and boho. I knew that one day I would design my own long vest. And here it is!

The Triple Cross Vest is super versatile. Make it in a solid colour and wear it over a white top and jeans. Or choose a bright, eye catching combination of colours and make it the focus of your outfit. Adjust the length according to your style. Short and modern, or long and boho. The options are only limited by your imagination.

I dug deep into my stash and came out with a large bag of cotton yarn for this one. I wanted to be able to wear it during the summer without feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Nob Hill Yarns Casual Cotton is a discontinued brand that was sold at Herrschners. The label says it is a #4 Worsted, but when I did a WPI test it measured as more like a #3 Dk. It is 14 WPI and I would recommend using a yarn of similar weight for this pattern. One of my testers made her Triple Cross Vest using Lion Brand’s Shawl in a Ball and it looks absolutely gorgeous!

Finished Sizes:

Any yarn of similar weight (about 14 WPI) would work.

See gauge swatch pattern below.

Change your hook size to achieve gauge.

Always be sure to make a gauge swatch before you begin. It will save you a lot of time and heartache.

Abbreviations:

Sk = Skip

Sp = Space

St = Stitch

Ss = Slip Stitch

Ch = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

Dc= Double Crochet

Tr = Triple/Treble Crochet

Vst = V Stitch (see notes)

Cdc = Crossed Double Crochet (see tutorial)

Notes:

Ch1  at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.

Ch3 at the beginning of a row is always considered a dc.

A V Stitch is made by placing a (dc, ch1, dc) into the specified stitch.

When the pattern calls to work into the Vst, you will place your stitch(es) into the space made by the ch1 between the 2 dcs.

This pattern calls for the Crossed Double Crochet (Cdc) stitch. In case you do not know how to do the Cdc, I have made a little tutorial that you can find here.

The model above has a 40” bust and is wearing a size Medium/Large.

 Choose your size according to the finished measurements noted above and your preferences.

You will also find measurements for each panel throughout this pattern.

Instructions

This vest is worked lengthwise. We will begin by working the first side panel, then make an armhole and continue on to the back panel, then make another armhole and continue on to the other side panel. Then we will finish off the outer edges and the armhole edges.

The length of your vest can be adjusted as you see fit. You just have to follow a few rules to find your starting chain. The amount of stitches in row 1 must be a multiple of 3 and an odd number. Then you add 1. So for example, 153 is a multiple of 3 and an odd number. 153+1=154 stitches in your first row. Here’s another example: 105 is a multiple of 3 and an odd number. 105+1=106 stitches in your first row. Once you have figured out how many stitches you want in your first row, add 2 and that is how many chains you start with (154+2=156 or 106+2=108).

Your 2nd side panel is now complete. Be sure to check that it matches the size of your 1st side panel.

Outer Edge

Now we will add a simple border to give the project some stability and neaten the edges. Give your project a ¼ turn clockwise. This is the right side of your project.

1. Ch 1. Sc along the sides of each row in the following manner:

1 sc in the end of each sc row.

2 sc in the end of each dc/Cdc/Vst row.

3 sc in the end of each tr row.

When you get to the corner, give your project another ¼ turn clockwise and continue working into the bottom of the first row.

(Sc, ch1, sc) into the bottom of the first st. Sc in the next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. (Sc, ch1, sc) in the last st.

Give your project another ¼ turn clockwise and continue working into the sides of each row in the same manner stated above.

When you get to the corner, give your project another ¼ turn clockwise and continue working into the top of the last row.

(Sc, ch1, sc) into the top of the first st. Sc in the next st and each st across until there is only 1 st left unworked. (Sc, ch1, sc) in the last st. Ss to the 1st st and bind off.  – 446 sc, 4 ch

Armhole Edges

With the right side of your project facing you (see outer edge instructions), join yarn in the stitch closest to the bottom of either armhole.

1. Sc in 1st st and each st around. Ss to the 1st st. Bind off.    – 68 (76, 76, 84, 84) sc

Now repeat for the other armhole, weave in your ends, and you’re done!
