Hello and welcome back to my channel
0:13
Today we are going to learn how to crochet the feather stitch
0:21
This tutorial is going to be two lessons in one. First I'm going to teach you how to crochet the feather stitch in rows
0:30
So we'll be making a swatch much like this one. This method is good for anything that lays flat like a scarf or a blanket
0:39
And you could even use it for some kitchen items such as trivets or pot holders
0:45
though I would double it up with another layer if you're going to be using it for anything hot
0:51
I will also teach you how to work the feather stitch in the round
0:55
which is perfect if you want to make anything tube-shaped, like a cowl
0:59
or a hat. You can also use this for working into a sweater or even some nice little gloves
1:13
For this tutorial, you will need some number four worsted weight yarn. I'm using Lion Brand Heartland
1:22
This one is in color Olympic. You will also need a number five, or sorry, a five millimeter hook
1:40
And you'll need a good pair of scissors. Okay, so to begin, you will make a slip knot
1:51
Slide that onto your hook. And we need an even number of chains down
2:00
stitches. So we're going to do 24. One, two, three, four, five. Oops. Six, seven, eight, nine
2:13
ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen
2:22
twenty one, twenty two, twenty two, twenty three, twenty four. Now, once
2:29
you have your chain, you're going to half double crochet in the second chain from the hook
2:45
All right. Once you have that, you're going to chain one, skip one, and half double crochet in the next stitch
3:00
And you're going to repeat that all the way across. So we'll chain one, skip one chain, and we're going to place a half double crochet into the next stitch
3:18
See that? And then again, chain one, skip one, and half double crochet in the next stitch
3:30
Okay. Now I want you to repeat that all the way across until you've worked to the very last chain
4:00
Now that is the base row for your feather stitch. You technically haven't started the feather stitch yet
4:10
but you're not going to be able to do the feather stitch without this base row
4:16
Now that that is finished, we're going to chain one. Oh, sorry, we're going to turn and chain one
4:28
Okay. Now, first thing we're going to do is place a half double crochet in the first stitch
4:40
And then we're going to chain one. That counts as your first two stitches in this row
4:50
Now we're going to begin the feather stitch. The feather stitch is worked over three chain spaces or three
4:59
stitches depending on what you have here so first place we're going to work into work
5:06
into is this chain space right here this big old chain space then we're going to
5:13
reach all the way down here and we're going to work into this chain stitch then
5:20
we're going to skip this stitch and work into this chain space over here and
5:27
And we're going to do that all with one stitch. So what you're going to do is yard over
5:34
Insert your hook into this first chain space, yarn over and draw up a loop
5:44
Now you want to bring this loop up so it's about the height of your half double crochet
5:51
You don't want it really tight like this. You want it up nice and high with your half double crochet
5:57
Now you're going to yarn over and you're going to insert your hook into this chain stitch down here, yarn over, and pull up another loop
6:11
And again, you want to bring this loop up nice and high so it comes up to the same height as this loop and your half double cushion
6:23
Next, we're going to yarn over and we're going to insert our hook in the same height as this loop and your half double crochet
6:24
and we're going to insert our hook in the next chain space
6:30
You skip this half double crochet and you insert your hook into the next chain space
6:36
yarn over and pull up a loop and again pull it up to the height of the rest of your loops and your half double crochet
6:45
Then you're going to yarn over and you're going to pull through all of your loops
6:51
You should have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven loops here
6:57
So you're going to yarn over and pull through all seven loops
7:06
You're almost done, but not quite. You're going to chain one and that closes your feather stitch
7:18
Okay, so we've done our first feather stitch. Now we're going to do
7:21
our next one. When you begin your next feather stitch, you're going to start off in the
7:28
same chain space that you just left off on. So you left off on this chain space, that's where
7:33
you put the last loop of your feather stitch. So you're going to start off here. You're going
7:39
to yarn over, insert your hook in the chain space, yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over
7:49
your hook in this chain stitch down here, yarn over, pull up another loop. Don't forget
7:56
to make these loops nice and tall Then you going to skip your half double crochet yarn over Insert your hook in the next chain space
8:08
Yarn over and pull up another loop. Then you're going to yarn over, pull through all seven loops
8:17
And then you're going to chain one to close. So now you've done two feather stitches
8:26
Good job. And now we're going to continue that way all the way across our swatch
8:35
Let me show you how to do this again. So, starting in the same chain one space that you just left off on, you're going to yarn over
8:45
insert your hook in the chain space, yarn over, pull up a loop
8:50
Make it nice and tall like your half doubles and like the rest of your feather stitches
8:54
You're going to yarn over, insert your hook into the chain one, yarn over, and pull up another loop
9:07
Then you're going to yarn over, skip one half double crochet, insert your hook into the
9:12
chain one, yarn over, and pull up another loop. Then you're going to yarn over and pull through all seven loops, and then chain one to close
9:24
okay so now you know how to do this feather stitch i want you to finish that until you'll get
9:37
almost all the way across i will show you when i get to the end how about that that's the easiest
9:44
so just keep going and keep working your feather stitch Okay, so you have feather stitched across your swatch, and you worked the last part of your last feather stitch into this last chain one space
10:20
and you have finished that feather stitch with a chain one. So now you're going to place a half double crochet into this last half double crochet
10:45
Now you have finished your first row of feather stitches. And now I'm going to show you how to work the next row
11:02
I'm going to turn and chain one. And you're going to begin with a half double crochet in the first stitch
11:20
chain one. Now you're going to work this row of feather stitches the same way that you did the
11:28
first one. The only thing is that your chain one spaces are a little bit different. They'll look a
11:34
little different than they did with the first one. So this right here is your first chain one space
11:43
Down here is your second chain one space. And up here, is your third chain one space. You'll see if you just kind of give the, give the row a little
11:56
bit of a stretch, you can actually pick out these chain one stitches quite easily. So, let's work
12:08
our first feather stitch for this row. You'll yarn over, insert your hook in the first
12:15
chain one space, pull up a loop. yarn over, insert your hook in the chain one space, below that one, and pull up a loop
12:30
Then yarn over, skip the body of this feather stitch, insert your hook in the chain
12:37
one space, pull up another loop. Then you'll yarn over and pull through all seven and chain one
12:50
See how they come together there? Let's do another one. And remember, you're going to start off in the same chain one space where you finished your
13:05
previous feather stitch. So yarn over, insert your hook in the chain one space, yarn over, pull up a loop
13:14
yarn over, insert your hook in the chain one space below that, yarn over, and then, and then
13:20
pull up another loop, yarn over, insert your hook in the next chain one space, yarn over
13:30
and pull up a loop, and yarn over, pull through all seven, and chain one. See? It looks very
13:43
complicated but it's actually not that hard. So, beginning in the chain one space where you just left off pull up one loop down below
14:02
and the next one oh dear I guess I'll have to do that again won't I
14:16
So, again, you're going to begin right where you left off with your previous feather stitch
14:25
Insert into this chain one space and pull up a loop, yarn over, this chain one space, and pull up another loop, yarn over, skip that feather stitch into the next chain one space and pull up another loop
14:42
Then, yarn over and pull through all seven. That looks beautiful. Okay. Now I want you to continue that way all the way across until your last feather stitch finishes in the last chain one space
15:15
It helped the speaker lead his audience into the scene he described
15:23
By creating an imaginary picture. Usually it's something that moves. Okay. Now that you finished your last feather stitch in the last chain one space
15:37
you're going to have double crochet in this last stitch. Okay Now you done two rows of feather stitches If you like you can keep practicing You can work 12 rows and you would end up with a nice beautiful swatch
16:11
And I'll show you what that looks like next. And this is what your finished swatch will look like
16:25
As you can see, this stitch is very thick and squishy. It is a wonderfully warm stitch
16:38
And it has this beautiful texture to it. I absolutely love it. Okay
16:51
Next, I am going to show you. how to work the feather stitch in the round. It is very similar to how you would work it in
17:04
rows. The only difference I would say is that you don't start off with a half double crochet
17:10
You're going to start off right with the feather stitch. But in order to get there
17:14
we're going to have to make a big circle. So we're going to chain an even number once again
17:21
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, eighteen, nineteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty-three, twenty-four
17:41
Okay, and then you're going to take this chain, and you're going to slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring
17:51
Just like that. And now we'll have to create our base row, which again is a half double crochet, chain one, skip one, and repeat that around
18:08
So we'll start off by chaining one. Then we're going to half double crochet in the first chain
18:21
Then we're going to chain one and we're going to skip the next chain stitch
18:30
Working into the next stitch, we're going to half double crochet and chain one and skip
18:39
the next chain. And you're going to repeat that all the way around
18:51
Okay, we've gotten all the way around
19:03
You've got one stitch left on worked, but that's supposed to be because you just chained one, right
19:09
So then you're just going to join to your first half double crochet with a slip stitch
19:19
Okay. And then we're going to. going to turn. And this is where we're going to start our first feather stitch. So you're going
19:28
to begin by chaining one. And you will work your feather stitch into the first chain space
19:40
into the stitch below that first chain space, and into the second chain space. So first
19:48
We're going to yarn over. Insert your hook into this first chain space
19:55
Yarn over. Draw up a loop. Make it nice and tall. You want it to be about the height of this chain one
20:06
Then you're going to yarn over. Insert your hook into the chain stitch below this chain one space
20:14
yarn over and pull up another loop. Make sure you pull that one up to the same height as the other loop
20:25
Yarn over. Skip this half double crochet and insert your hook into this chain one space
20:35
Yarn over and draw up another loop. You should now have seven loops on your hook
20:42
you're going to yarn over and draw through all seven loops and then you're going to chain one to finish it off
20:53
and there is your first feather stitch now you will work your next feather stitch and all of your
21:06
subsequent feather stitch is the same way but you will not start in the next chain one space
21:12
you will start in the one that you just finished off with. So you finished off with this chain one space
21:20
That is where you'll begin your next one. So you'll yarn over, insert your hook into the same chain one space you just worked
21:28
Yarn over and draw up a loop. Make sure it's good and tall
21:33
Yarn over. Insert your hook into the chain stitch below that chain one space
21:40
yarn over, draw up another loop. And again, don't forget to make it nice and tall
21:48
Yarn over, skip this half double crochet, insert your hook into the next, chain one space
21:56
yarn over, and draw up another loop. Seven loops on your hook
22:03
yarn over, and draw through all seven loops. And then chain one
22:10
to finish it off. Let's do that one more time. We're going to yarn over, insert your hook into the
22:21
same chain one space you just worked, yarn over, draw up a loop. Bring it up to the height of the
22:29
other stitches. Yarn over, insert your hook into the chain stitch below the chain one space you
22:37
just worked, yarn over, draw up another loop. Don't forget to make it nice and tall. Yarn over
22:48
skip this half double crochet and insert your hook into the next chain one space. Yarn
22:54
over and draw up a loop. Now that you have seven loops on your hook and they're all nice and tall
23:00
you're going to yarn over and draw through all seven and then chain one
23:07
So now you have three feather stitches worked. You're going to work in that same manner all the way around until you have worked your
23:24
last feather stitch into this and finished it in the last chain one space
23:31
And then I'm going to show you how to finish off this row. Round. Okay
23:37
Okay, so now we've made it almost all the way around
23:54
You can see that you've finished your last feather stitch into this last chain one space
24:01
but there still a gap there We still have one more feather stitch to do This last one is going to fall into this chain one space this chain stitch underneath that chain one space
24:16
and into the chain one space that you've started your first feather stitch on
24:24
You see how that works? So we're going to put our first loop
24:29
into this first, this chain one space that you worked before. And you're going to put your second loop
24:38
into the stitch underneath that chain one space. And then if you look over here and you just give it a little tug
24:46
you can see that's the first chain one space that you worked in
24:49
for your first feather stitch. So you will put your last loop into there
24:57
And it looks a little bit funny, but once you yarn over and finish it off, it looks like a nice continuous round
25:11
And then you will slip stitch to join into the first feather stitch
25:17
Make sure that you're joining into the body of your feather stitch and not into the chain one
25:28
right there. Okay. And now we can turn and I will show you how to do your next round of feather stitches
25:41
So you'll chain one. And again, if you just give it a little tug here
25:49
you'll see where your chain one spaces lie. So you'll see that your first chain one stitch
25:57
chain one space is right there just after your slip stitch here and then the one
26:07
underneath that lies here and it's where that branch of your feather stitch
26:14
was worked and then you'll skip the feather stitch and you'll work into this
26:20
chain one space I'm going to show you how to do this okay so we're going to
26:25
yarn over. You're going to insert your hook into this first chain one space, yarn over and
26:32
draw up a loop. Remember to get it nice and tall. You want it to be the height of your chain one
26:40
Then down here is where you're going to work your next loop. So you're going to yarn over
26:46
insert your hook into the chain one space underneath the chain one space you just worked
26:51
yarn over and draw up a loop. Okay, then you're going to skip the body of this feather stitch
27:01
You're going to work your next loop into this chain one space. Yarn over, insert your hook into that chain one space, drop another loop
27:12
Then you will yarn over and draw through all seven and chain one to finish
27:21
You see how that looks? Nice. Okay. So, again, just give this a nice little tug, and you can see where your chain one spaces are
27:34
So you'll be starting off in the same chain one space that you just left off on
27:40
Yarn over, insert your hook into that same chain one space. Drop a loop
27:45
yarn over, insert your hook into the chain space underneath that chain one space
27:53
yarn over and draw up another loop. Skip the body of this feather stitch, yarn over, insert your hook into the next chain one space
28:02
and draw up another loop. And yarn over and draw through all seven and chain one
28:11
You can see that the feather stitch is starting to take shape here. So I want you to continue like that all the way around again until you have worked into this last chain one space
28:27
And then I'll show you how to finish it off. Okay
28:45
So you've worked almost all the way around. This is your first stitch here
28:51
You worked into that last chain one space. And this will be very similar to the previous row
28:59
You're going to work into the work. You're going to work your last feather stitch into this chain one space, this chain
29:06
one space below that one. Then you're going to work into the first chain one space that you're going to work into the first chain one space
29:15
that you worked at the beginning of this round. And if you just give it a little stretch
29:21
you can see it's just over here. So first loop goes about here
29:29
Second loop goes in the stitch underneath. Third loop, you're gonna reach all the way over here
29:41
and insert that into the first chain one space that you worked
29:45
at the beginning of the round. And then yarn over and pull through all seven
29:52
and chain one to close. And you'll see that that makes an almost seamless join here
30:01
You really can't tell that this is where your seam is
30:11
And you'll slip stitch to the first stitch that you worked for this round
30:23
So this is how I work the feather stitch in the round. If you want to keep practicing, you can go right ahead and just keep on building rows onto this one
30:36
I'll see what that, I'll tell you what, I'll show you what that looks like next
30:45
I ended up stopping after five rows because take a look at this
30:52
Does that not make just the cutest little rister? I quite like it
31:01
The texture on this stitch is just amazing. And I think this is super nice and comfy
31:15
And that is my feather stitch tutorial. Now you know how to do this stitch in rows and in the round
31:31
If you take a look at my blog and my Ramblery store, I'll bet you you'll find a few patterns
31:38
that feature this stitch. And if you liked this tutorial, please remember to like the video and subscribe to my YouTube channel
31:51
And until next time, happy hooking
