Hello and welcome back to my channel
0:13
Today I will be teaching you how to crochet the puff stitch
0:18
This stitch is featured in two of my favorite patterns, the puffs in pico set and the
0:23
some of its parts pull over. If you're interested in these patterns, I have linked them in the description box down below
0:30
In this tutorial I'm going to teach you two different swatches. We're going to start off with this one
0:39
It's an alternating row of double crochet and puff stitch. And I find this is a really great way to learn the puff stitch
0:53
And after that, I'm going to teach you how to work the puff stitch into a base chain
0:59
and create a swatch of just solid puff stitch. I do like the look of both of these swatches
1:14
They have their own little personalities to them. To do this tutorial, all you're going to need is some yarn
1:29
and a hook. Now, myself, I'm using Lion Brand Heartland. This color is Yosemite. And it's a number four
1:41
worsted weight yarn. And I'm using a number six crochet hook
1:59
Now, when I learn a new stitch, I like to learn it over a base row of stitches
2:05
I just find it a little easier to manage learning this brand new stitch when I'm not trying to work into a base chain, because I know base chains are so finicky
2:17
So, we're going to start off with a base row of double crochets
2:24
And you're going to need a chain number that is a multiple of two
2:29
So we're going to start off with 20 chains. So one, two, three, ah, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fourteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, nineteen, nineteen, twenty
2:54
all right and now you're going to place a double crochet into the fourth chain from your hook just like that
3:11
and this first chain three here that's your first double crochet the first double crochet this
3:17
first double crochet that you made is actually your second double crochet and then we're going to
3:22
double crochet and each chain across. Okay
3:42
So now we have 18 double crochets. And you're going to turn
3:52
and chain three. So this first chain three is going to be your first double crochet
4:04
So this first stitch has already worked. We're going to begin our puff stitch in the next stitch
4:13
So to begin this puff stitch, you're going to yarn over, insert your hook into that stitch and pull up a loop
4:25
You want to pull up this loop to about the height of a double crochet
4:30
You don't want to have it all the way down here like you're going to complete a double crochet
4:35
You want to pull it up so that it's the height of this double crochet that you first made
4:42
See that? And then you're going to yarn over. insert your hook in the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up another loop
4:56
So now you'll have five loops on your hook. Not done yet
5:00
You're going to yarn over, insert your hook in the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up another loop
5:09
Just about there. Now you're going to yarn over, insert your hook again in the same stitch, yarn over
5:17
over and pull up another loop So now you got one two three four five six seven eight nine loops on your hook
5:30
You're going to yarn over and pull your hook through all nine loops
5:39
And now you're going to yarn over and chain one. and that is your first puff stitch so this puff stitch is actually made up of two stitches if you look at it on top
5:57
this here is your first double crochet and these two stitches make up your puff stitch so it's the
6:07
puff stitch and then chain one and both of those are part of your your puff stitch so that
6:14
means when you go to make your next puff stitch you have to skip one stitch
6:21
So we're going to skip a stitch and working into the next stitch, we're going to make another
6:27
puff stitch. We're going to yarn over, insert your hook into that stitch, yarn over
6:35
and pull up a loop. Remember to pull it up nice and tall to the height of a double crochet
6:42
over insert your hook in the same stitch, yarn over and pull up another loop. Yarn over, insert
6:52
your hook in the same stitch again, pull up another loop. Yarn over, insert your hook in the
7:00
same stitch, yarn over, and pull up another loop. So you're repeating that process into this
7:07
loop, into this stitch four times. And then you yarn over. and pull through all nine loops and then chain one
7:19
And there's your second puff stitch. And you'll see that this is a stitch you're going to want to practice because it can take a bit of
7:29
practice to train yourself to make these loops so loose. You're going to want to, you know, tighten it up like this to make a double-crust
7:42
crochet, but you don't want to do that. You want to pull it nice and loose all the way up here
7:48
So we've done one. Let's do another one. Another one and another one. See
8:00
And then pull it through and chain one. All right, that one was for me. I'm going to do another one for you
8:08
So we're going to yarn over, skip one stitch here, yarn over, and then insert your hook in the next stitch, pull up a loop, and pull it up tall
8:23
Yarn over, insert your hook in the same stitch, pull up another loop, nice and tall
8:29
Yarn over, insert your hook in the same stitch, pull up another loop, keep it tall
8:35
Yarn over, insert your hook in the same stitch, and pull up one more loop
8:43
And then yarn over, pull through both nine, and then chain one
8:52
Okay, so let's continue that. Remember to skip a stitch in between each puff stitch
8:59
And let's work that all the way across. Oh, okay, I lied
9:10
We're not going to go all the way across. You want two stitches left unworked
9:16
If you put a puff stitch in this stitch, then you're going to end up with one extra stitch
9:20
You don't want to do that. So you're going to have two stitches left unworked
9:25
You're going to skip this stitch, and then you're going to place a double crochet in your last stitch
9:35
So you've done one row of puff stitches
9:47
Now I'm going to show you how to do a row of double crochets into the top of this puff stitch row
9:57
So we're going to turn in chain three. remember this first chain three counts as your first double crochet and we're going to double
10:10
crochet in each stitch across but remember that each of these puff stitches has two stitches
10:18
so you're going to place two double crochets in the top of each puff stitch first there and there
10:29
just like that okay so continue this all the way across. Okay Okay So now you worked your first row of double crochets a row of puff stitches and a row of double crochets on top of that
11:06
If you'd like to keep practicing, you can and do another row of puff stitches and another row of double crochets
11:18
And you can repeat that two more times to make a nice little swatch
11:24
And I'll show you what that looks like next. And here is your finished swatch
11:35
I actually quite like doing the puff stitch this way because when you alternate the
11:42
the puff stitch with the double crochet stitch, it makes sure that the puffy side of the puff
11:48
stitch is all on one side. If you'll notice, if you flip it over, this side is less puffy. It has a little
11:59
bit of a different texture, which is nice depending on how you want your design to look, right
12:12
So next, I'm going to show you how to work the puff stitch into a chain, and then we're going to do a solid swatch of just puff stitch
12:26
Okay, now we're going to make a swatch of just solid puff stitches. So you're going to need a chain, and you're going to need your chain to be a multiple of two plus four
12:39
So we're going to start with a chain of 22. So one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fourteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty one, twenty-two
13:09
Okay. Now, you're going to start with your first puff stitch working into the fourth chain
13:20
So you're going to skip the first three chains, yarn over, insert your hook into the fourth chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop
13:32
You want to pull up that loop, so it's nice and tall, both the height of a double crochet
13:39
Next, you're going to yarn over, insert your hook in the same loop, or same stitch
13:45
I should, same chain stitch, I should say, yarn over, and pull up another loop
13:52
Yarn over, insert your hook in the same chain, yarn over, and pull up another loop
14:02
One more time, we're going to yarn over, insert your hook into the same chain, yarn over
14:08
into the same chain, yarn over and pull up one more loop. So you have nine loops on your hook
14:16
You're going to yarn over and pull through all nine loops. And then you're going to chain one
14:24
And that is your first puff stitch. This first chain three, that counts as a double crochet
14:34
And each puff stitch counts as two stitches. So that means we'll have to skip one chain, work our next puff into the next chain
14:46
So you're going to yarn over, insert your hook into that chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop
14:54
Make it nice and tall. Yarn over, insert your hook in the same chain, yarn over, pull up another loop
15:04
Yarn over. Insert your hook in that same chain again. Yarn over. Pull up another loop
15:12
Yarn over. Insert your hook in that same chain one more time. Pull up one more loop
15:20
Nine loops on your hook. You're going to yarn over. Pull through all nine loops. Then you're going to
15:29
chain one. And that's your second pup finished. Let's do it again
15:37
You're going to skip the next chain. Working into the next chain after that, you're going to yarn over, insert your hook through
15:45
that chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Pull it up nice and tall
15:52
Yarn over, insert your hook into the same chain, yarn over, and pull up another loop
16:01
over insert your hook in that same chain again yarn over and pull up another loop Yarn over insert your hook into the same chain again yarn over and pull up another loop
16:17
So you'll notice that you yarn over, insert your hook, and pull up a loop four times
16:26
And that gives you nine loops on your hook, yarn over, and pull through all nine
16:34
and then chain one. Okay, so we're going to continue that across this chain until you have two chain stitches left unworked
16:49
Okay, so we have two more chain stitches left unworked
17:04
You're going to skip this stitch and then you're going to place a double crochet in the last stitch
17:15
Just like that. So that's row one of your puff stitches
17:27
And now we're going to place another row on top of this one
17:31
So you're going to turn. and chain three. In this chain three counts as your first double crochet. So we're going to
17:45
place our first puff stitch into this puff stitch and we're going to start off in the first
17:52
stitch of the puff stitch. So it's actually a chain but it's part of your puff stitch. So it's
18:00
this very next stitch here is where you're going to start your puff stitch. So you're
18:04
over insert your hook into that next stitch pull up a loop nice and tall yarn over
18:12
insert your hook pull up a loop yarn over insert your hook and pull up another
18:19
loop yarn over insert your hook pull up one more loop nine loops on your hook you're
18:29
going to yarn over and pull through all nine and then chain one
18:34
You'll see that puff stitch rests right on top of the puff stitch from the previous row
18:43
So when you work your next puff stitch, you're going to skip this stitch and work into this stitch
19:04
See how it's going there
19:14
So puff stitch, skip a stitch, puff stitch. Skip a stitch, puff stitch
19:22
And you're going to continue that way across until there are two stitches left unworked
19:29
Okay, so now we have two stitches left unworked
19:40
You're going to put a double crochet into this last stitch. Now if you want to continue and keep on practicing
19:59
you'll just repeat row two. I'm going to keep going and make a nice little swatch and you'll see how that looks
20:12
And there you have your puff stitch swatch. You can see that I repeated my rows until I had one, two, three, four, five, six, seven
20:26
And I also really love this swatch because I love this swatch because I look. like how the puff stitch is lean in different directions depending on which way you are working
20:41
Gives like a little zigzaggy kind of look to it. And it looks the same on the back or the front
20:59
Now you know how to crochet the puff stitch. With a little bit of practice, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time
21:08
