The Inspiration Behind the Design
This design began as a tiny spark of inspiration. I was browsing through Expression Fiber Arts’ beautiful yarn collection (as one does) when I came across a colourway called Drops of Jupiter. Of course, my first thought was the song by Train and the music of my youth. But it also reminded me of a school project I did years ago on the planet itself, and how enchanted I became with the gas giant.
I was fascinated by her size, her colours, and the way she looked solid but was actually made up of swirling gases. As if she were a ghost. I became mesmerized by her centuries-old storms and her many moons. So I decided to take that inspiration and run with it.
I chose a stitch pattern that flows like waves, mimicking Jupiter’s chaotic, swirling cloud bands. I named the design after her fourth-largest moon, Europa, which some scientists believe may hold the key elements needed to support life. Imagine what it would be like to live in the shadow of that great planet…

Gauge Swatch Pattern
The instructions below will create a gauge swatch that is 6 ⅞” wide by 6 ¾” high after blocking. In this pattern, the height and width of your gauge swatch are both important, since the height of your stitches will determine the length of your sleeves as well as the width of your top, and the width of your stitches will determine the width of your sleeves as well as the length of your top.

Instructions
This top is created by working sideways. We will begin with the right sleeve. Next, we’ll work across the body from the right shoulder to the left shoulder. Then, we’ll work the left sleeve. Finally, we will finish the edges with rows of single crochet and slip stitches.
With 4mm hook (or hook used to obtain gauge)
Right Sleeve
Before we begin, you will need to choose which sleeve size you want. To determine your sleeve size, you should know the circumference of your upper arm. To measure your upper arm, use a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your arm.
Once you know your arm measurement, choose from the sleeve sizes listed below. You may choose whichever sleeve size you want, regardless of body size.
Instructions are given for the following sleeve circumferences: 9 ½” (12 ½”, 15 ¾”, 18 ¾”, 22”, 25”)
Remember for this section that you are following instructions based on your sleeve size. Not your body size.

Measurement Check: Your sleeve should now be 2 ½” long with a total circumference of 9 ½” (12 ½”, 15 ¾”, 18 ¾”, 22”, 25”).
Repeat rows 2-9 until you have achieved the desired length for your sleeve (measuring from the underarm), ending on a repeat of row 9. Each repeat of 8 rows equals 2 ¼”. Keep in mind that the sleeves may stretch a little depending on your yarn. If you are using natural fibers, I suggest blocking the sleeve before moving on to determine if the length is what you desire.
At the end of your last repeat of round 9, sl st into the next st. You should now be in the center sc of the closest group of 3 sc. Do not bind off.

Right Shoulder
In this section we will add length to the bottom of the top, as well as adding width to the body, working over the right shoulder. When you are finished with this section your project will look similar to Figures 1 & 2 below.

Figure 1

Figure 2
First, we will work a long chain to add length to the bottom of the blouse. Then, we will begin working in rows to form the shoulder.
Start by chaining 83. This chain will add 16 inches to the bottom of your blouse. The total length of your top will differ depending on what sleeve size you are making.
- Tops with size 9 ½” sleeves will be 20 ¾” long.
- Tops with 12 ½” sleeves will be 22 ¼” long.
- Tops with 15 ¾” sleeves will be 23 ⅞” long.
- Tops with 18 ¾” sleeves will be 25 ¼” long.
- Tops with 22” sleeves will be 27” long.
- Tops with 25” sleeves will be 28 ½” long.
If you would like to adjust the length of your top, simply add or subtract any multiple of 16 chains. Each multiple of 16 chains will change your final length by approximately 3” and your stitch count by 32 stitches.
The stitch counts for this section are based on a starting chain of 83 and sleeve sizes of 9 ½” (12 ½”, 15 ¾”, 18 ¾”, 22”, 25”).
- (WS) Ch 83 (or your adjusted number of starting ch).

For body sizes XXS/XS (S/M, L/XL, 2XL/3XL, 4XL/5XL): Repeat rows 2-9 until you have a total of 16 (16, 24, 24, 32) rows, counting from row 1 of the right shoulder. Do not bind off.
Measurement Check: Your right shoulder should measure 4 ½” (4 ½”, 6 ¾”, 6 ¾”, 9”, 9”) wide at this point.
Center Back
We will now work the rows running along the back of the neckline. When you are finished with this section, your project will look similar to Figures 3 & 4 below.

Front Right
We will now begin adding rows to the center front of the top. When you are finished with this section your project will look similar to Figures 5 & 6 below.

Figure 5

Figure 6
First, we will need to join the yarn to the front of the project, near the last row worked for the right shoulder (you can see my hook is placed in the area I’m talking about in Figure 7 below). Turn your project so that the wrong side is facing you and the last row of the right shoulder is up. Skip the next unworked stitch of the last row of the right shoulder, and join your yarn in the next unworked stitch (see Figure 8).

Left Shoulder
In this section we will add width to the body, working rows over the left shoulder. When you are finished with this section your project should look similar to Figure 13 below.

Figure 13
With the wrong side facing you, join your yarn in the last stitch of the last row of the center back section (there should be a yarn tail from where you bound off there previously, as seen in Figures 14 & 15 below).

For body sizes XXS/XS (S/M, L/XL, 2XL/3XL, 4XL/5XL): Repeat rows 2-9 until you have a total of 16 (16, 24, 24, 32) rows, counting from row 1 of the left shoulder. Do not bind off. Turn your top wrong side out. Holding the front and back layers together, slip stitch through the first 82 stitches (see Figure 16 below). Note: If you added or subtracted chains at the beginning of the right shoulder, you will have to add or subtract that number from your slip stitches here. Do not bind off.

Figure 16
Note: When I used the slip stitch method to close, the seam puckered inward. This was corrected when I wet blocked my finished top, and the seam now lays flat. Also if you tend to slip stitch tightly, you may want to use a larger hook for this step.
If you do not care for the slip stitch closure, you are welcome to bind off and whip stitch the seam closed.
Left Sleeve
Turn your project right side out. If you used whip stitches to close your side seam, you will need to rejoin your yarn at the top of that seam, where the underarm should be.
For sleeve sizes: 9 ½” (12 ½”, 15 ¾”, 18 ¾”, 22”, 25”): You should have 47 (63, 79, 95, 111, 127) sts unworked for your left sleeve. The instructions for this section are for your chosen sleeve size, not your body size.

Finishing
All of the edges are finished with a round of sc, followed by a round of ss. With RS facing you, join your yarn anywhere along the edge.
Note: The goal of this step is to stabilize the edges and get them to lay flat. If your edge is looking wonky, pull out the sc row and try again, adjusting the number of stitches you used.
Sleeves
- (RS) Ch1. Sc in 1st st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Do not turn.
- (RS) Ss in next st and each st around. Be careful not to ss too tightly. Bind off.
Bottom
- (RS) Ch1. Sc around the bottom edge in the following manner:
– Place 1 sc in the side of each sc.
– Place 3 sc in the side of each tr.
– Once all of the sts have been worked, ss to join to 1st st. Do not turn. - Ss in next st and each st around. Be careful not to ss too tightly. Bind off.
Neckline
- (RS) Sc around the neckline in the following manner:
– For the upper back and front of the neck: Place 1 sc in the side of each sc, and 3 sc in the side of each tr.
– At the top corners of the split seam: Work (sc, ch1, sc) in each corner.
– For the split seam at the front: Place 1 sc in each st and 1 sc in the bottom of the split.
– Once all of the sts have been worked, ss to join to 1st st. Do not turn. - Ss in next st and each st around. Be careful not to ss too tightly. Bind off.
Weave in your ends, and you’re done! If you used a natural fiber like I did, I highly recommend blocking your project.
