I am so excited to share this pattern with you! This is my first time designing mittens. Designed using the herringbone single crochet stitch, these mittens are so wonderfully textured and thick, they will be warm and squishy on your hands.
Pair these mitts up with the matching hat and scarf, and you’ll be cozy and fashionable this season!

Abbreviations:
RS = Right Side
WS = Wrong Side
Sk = Skip
St = Stitch
Ss = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Hsc = Herringbone Single Crochet (see tutorial here)
Hsc2tog = Herringbone Single Crochet 2 Together (explained within the pattern)
Blo = Back Loop Only
Gauge Swatch:
16 hsc in blo x 10 rows = 4 ¼” H x 4 ¼” W
Notes:
Ch1 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.
This entire pattern will be worked in the back loop only, though the Hsc tutorial is shown using both top loops.
For this pattern, we will only be using the herringbone single crochet (Hsc) and not the reverse herringbone single crochet (Rhsc).

Instructions
These mittens are made by working sideways in rows. We will be working from the wrist, up to the tips of the fingers, and then back down towards the wrist with each row. The cuff edge is left unfinished. All rows after row 1 are worked into the back loop only. Remember that we do not do reverse herringbone single crochet stitches. Only regular herringbone single crochet stitches.

- Ss through only the layer closest to you for the next 7 (8, 9) sts. Skip the 7 (8, 9) sts on the back layer (see Figure 8).
- Ss through both layers for the last 14 (16, 17) sts (see Figure 9). Bind off.

The thumb is made by working short rows of slip stitches in the back loop only. Begin by joining your yarn at the top of the thumb hole with the right side facing you (see Figure 10).

- Sk 2 sts. Ss in blo of next st and each st across (see Figure 14). Turn. – 8 st
- Ch1. Ss in blo of 1st st and each st across. Ss to next 2 sts of thumb hole (see Figure 15). Turn. – 10 st

- Repeat rows 2 & 3 around the entire thumb hole, ending with a repeat of row 2. Bind off, leaving a long tail.
- Turn your mitt inside out so the right sides are together. Weave your tail through the ends of each row in the end of the thumb (see Figure 16). Pull tightly and knot to close.
- Use the same tail to whip stitch the side of the thumb closed (see Figure 17). Be sure to add a stitch or two to the bottom of the thumb to take care of any gaping (as seen in Figure 18). Knot securely.
