The Double Cross Cardigan (pictured below) features the Spike Double Crochet stitch. Since this isn’t a common stitch, I thought I would provide an easy-to-follow photo tutorial.

The Spike Double Crochet stitch (spdc) is basically the same as the double crochet stitch but with one difference. Instead of working the double crochet into the next stitch of the current row, you are working that double crochet stitch into the row beneath.

  • To begin, yarn over and insert your hook into the corresponding stitch in the row below your current row (see Figure 1).
  • Now yarn over and pull up a loop. Draw your loop up to the proper height of a dc worked into the current row (see Figure 2).
  • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. You have now completed a spike double crochet stitch.
  • Be sure that your bottom loops aren’t too tight and pinching the row below or too loose and baggy (see Figure 3).

If your spdc doesn’t look quite right, pull it out and try again.Everything is made better with practice!

In some patterns (like the one below), you will be asked to skip stitches and work a spdc in the next stitch. When you do this you may have to make the bottom loops of your stitch a bit looser to accommodate the longer stitch.

Now that you know how to do the Spike Double Crochet Stitch, head on over to the Double Cross Cardigan and put it to work!
