Of course now that I am on the crochet leg warmer train, I simply had to design a pair for the Phaseolus set. I have received many requests for more crochet leg warmer patterns (my daughter’s being the loudest), so I was happy to oblige.
Crochet Leg Warmers Pattern – Phaseolus
Finished Sizes:
Instructions given to fit size XSmall; changes for Small, Medium & Large are in ()
XS (S, M, L)
To fit Calf Circumference: 13 ½” (15 ½”, 17 ½”, 19 ½”)
Finished Length: Customizable. Length on model shown is 15”.
Materials:
I used Loops & Threads Facets, which is 100% Acrylic, #4 Worsted weight yarn.
Any yarn of similar weight would work.
Approximately 250 (300, 370, 465) yds.
5mm Hook
Stitch Markers

Abbreviations:
Sk = Skip
Sp = Space
St = Stitch
Ss = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
Bn = Bean Stitch (See Notes and Tutorial Below)
3rd Lo = 3rd Loop Only (See Tutorial Below)
Blo = Back Loop Only
Alt Jn = Alternative Join (See Tutorial Below)
Gauge:
16 hdc x 10 rows = 4” H x 4” W
Notes:
Ch1 at the beginning of a row is never considered a stitch.
Ch1 between sts is always considered a stitch.
Ch3 at the beginning of a row is always considered a Dc.
A Bean Stitch counts as 2 stitches.
Crochet Leg Warmers Pattern – Phaseolus
Instructions
Make 2.
With 5mm Hook (or hook used to obtain gauge)
Top Cuff
- Ch14. Sc in 2ch ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. – 13 st
- Ch1. Sc in blo of 1st 12 sts. Sc in both loops of last st. Turn. – 13 st
- Ch1. Sc in 1st st. Sc in blo of next st and each st across. Turn. – 13 st
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have a total of 40 (48, 56, 64) rows.
Now we will ss the ends of the top cuff together.
- Turn your work as if you are going to do another row of sc, but don’t ch.
- Fold the bottom row up so that it sits in front of your top row.
- Insert your hook through the bottom bar of the 1st st your first row and the 2 top loops of the 1st st of your last row (see Figure 1) and make a slip stitch.
- *Insert your hook through the bottom bar of the next st and the blo of your next st (see Figure 2) and make a ss.** Repeat from * to ** across. This is the wrong side of your top cuff.
- Turn the cuff right side out. (See Figure 3) Do not bind off. The first round will be worked into the side of the cuff where your hook is. We will now be working in the round, but still turning after each round.

Leg Warmer Body
- (RS) Ch1. Work 1 hdc into the side of each row around. Ss (or alt jn) to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- (WS) Working in 3rd lo: Ch3. Dc in next st and each st around. Ss to join to 1t st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch1, hdc in 1st st. *Ch1, sk1 st, hdc in next st.** Repeat from * to ** until 1 st left. Ch1, ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch1, sk 1st st. *Sc in next ch1 sp. Ch1, sk1 st, bn in next ch1 sp. Sk1 st.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch1, sk 1st st. Hdc in next ch1 sp. *Ch1, sk1 st, hdc in next ch1 sp.** Repeat from * to ** until 1 st left. Ch1, sk last st, ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch3. Dc in next ch sp and each st/ch sp around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch1, hdc in 1st st. Hdc in next st and each st around. Ss (or alt jn) to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Working in 3rd lo: Ch1, hdc in 1st st. Hdc in next st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
- Ch3 (see Figure 4). Working behind st just made, dc in previous st (see Figure 5). *Sk1 st, dc in next st. Working behind st just made, dc in skipped st.** Repeat from * to ** around. Ss to join to 1st st (see Figure 6). Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st

- Repeat round 9.
- Ch1, hdc in 1st st. Hdc in next st and each st around. Ss (or alt jn) to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
Repeat rounds 2-11 until you have achieved your desired length minus 3”. Make sure to end on a repeat of row 7 or 11. For the 15” legwarmers pictured, I repeated rows 2-11 one more time. Once you have your desired length, work round 12 below and proceed to the bottom cuff instructions.
- Working in 3rd lo: Ch1, sc in 1st st. Sc in next st and each st around. Ss to join to 1st st. Turn. – 40 (48, 56, 64) st
Crochet Leg Warmers Pattern – Phaseolus
Bottom Cuff
To make the bottom cuff, we will be working short rows off of the last round worked on the body of the leg warmer. Turn your work so that the right side is facing you.
- Ch14 (see Figure 7). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (see Figure 8). Ss into same st you chained from on hat body. Ss into next unworked st (see Figure 9). Turn. – 13 st
- Sk2 ss. Sc in BLO of 1st st 12 sts. Sc in both loops of last st (see Figure 10). Turn. – 13 st
- Ch1. Sc in 1st st. Sc in BLO of next 12 sts (see Figure 11). Ss into next 2 unworked sts on hat body (see Figure 12). Turn. – 13 st

Repeat rows 2 & 3 all the way around the leg warmer body. You will end with a row 2 repeat. Turn your work so the wrong side is facing you. Ss the ends of the cuff closed , working in the bottom bar of the 1st row and the BLO of the last row.
Weave in your ends and you’re done!
